Question 1

What is Quebrada de Jerez?

Accepted Answer

A narrow, spring-fed canyon beside Toconao, about 38 km south of San Pedro de Atacama. Water runs year-round, supporting reeds, grasses and fruit trees — a striking green corridor in the desert. A community-managed loop path of roughly 45-60 minutes follows the stream under shade and climbs back to the entrance, with a small fee charged at the gate.

Question 2

How much does Quebrada de Jerez cost?

Accepted Answer

A small community fee, typically around CLP 5,000 (roughly USD 5), is charged at the entrance by the Toconao families who manage the site. Payment is cash. The fee maintains the path, shade structures and picnic area. Rates change from season to season, so carry small bills and confirm the current price in the village before you go.

Question 3

Can you swim in Quebrada de Jerez?

Accepted Answer

Not really — the stream is shallow and feeds the orchards and fields below, so wading is the most you should expect. Some pools tempt a quick cool-off in warm months, but there are no designated swim areas and the water is shared with irrigation and wildlife. Come for the shade, birds and the walk; plan actual swims for the salar lagoons.

Question 4

How do I get to Quebrada de Jerez without a tour?

Accepted Answer

Rent a car and drive about 38 km south on the paved Toconao road; the signed entrance sits on the village outskirts with parking at the gate. Public transport is effectively nonexistent, so a rental car or a tour are the realistic options. Many travelers self-drive Toconao, the canyon and Laguna Chaxa as one easy southern loop day.

Question 5

Is Quebrada de Jerez good for kids?

Accepted Answer

Yes — it is one of the most kid-friendly walks near San Pedro: short, shaded, with water and birds to hold attention. The loop has a few steep, gravelly steps, so hold small children's hands and use closed shoes. Watch for wasps around fruit in summer and keep everyone away from the deeper pools. Strollers will not manage the steps.
