Three ways to do the same desert

The same 4-day trip, three budgets. The tours barely change — what changes is where you sleep and how much of the desert you cover with a guide.

Five ways this number gets smaller

  • Book tours with free cancellation and pay on arrival — then hunt the last-day deals on Caracoles street with your plan already in hand. Compare verified prices on our prices page.

  • Rent a bike (about US$ 8/day) and self-guide Valle de la Luna on day 2 — the park fee is the same, the tour price disappears. See the Valle de la Luna guide.

  • Cook breakfast, eat the menú del día at lunch (US$ 6–9) and splurge once. Full food math in the San Pedro budget guide.

  • Carry CLP cash in small bills: park fees are cash-only, card minimums are common, and the DTPM bus to Calama costs a fraction of a shuttle.

  • Travel in April–May or September–October: same skies, lower lodging rates, and tour calendars are fuller than in the January rain window.
