Why travelers pick it
SPACE is run by working astronomers — the team behind the SPACE/spaceobs observatory project — and it shows in the operation: serious telescopes, astrophotography setups for guests, and nightly talks that actually explain what you are seeing rather than pointing at dots. If the sky is the reason you came to the Atacama, this is the most honest bed in the valley; our stargazing guide sets the broader context.
Set expectations: rooms are cozy rather than luxe, the lodge sits far enough out that town lights die completely (arrange transport — it is not an evening-walk location), and dinner is communal and included, which turns out to be half the charm. Rates of roughly US$ 150–250 per person sit between hostels and lodges.
Good to know
Red-light discipline is real: after dark the lodge runs on dim red lighting to protect night vision — romantic for some, frustrating for readers.
Moon phases matter more here than anywhere: deep-sky sessions shine near new moon, while full-moon weeks trade the Milky Way for lunar detail — plan dates with the moon tool before booking.
Getting there: the 25-minute walk is unrealistic at night; drive or use the lodge's transfer, and coordinate Calama airport pickups (~1 h 15 min) in advance.
Altitude and cold: night sessions at 2,450 m in June–August mean below-freezing hours outside; the lodge issues extra layers, but bring your own gloves and hat.
Not a family resort: the setup suits adults and teens genuinely into astronomy; younger kids struggle with the late, quiet, dark format.
Booking tips
Book directly with the lodge — inventory is tiny and OTA coverage is patchy; email ahead if you want an astrophotography-specific setup.
Plan 2+ nights: one clear night is luck, two or three is a strategy; check moon phases first and keep mid-trip dates flexible for weather.
Typical rates run US$ 150–250 per person with dinner; confirm which observation nights are included in your dates rather than assuming nightly sessions.
