Why go
On the right weekends, Machuca's handful of stone-and-adobe houses sprout grills: skewers of marinated llama turning over embers, pebre and bread on the side, everything paid in cash and eaten standing in the thin air at 4,010 m. It began as local families selling food to travelers on the geyser road and has become the tastiest detour in the highlands — when it happens.
Treat it as a bonus, not a plan: pair a Machuca village stop with your El Tatio morning or the drive to the high lagoons, and if the smoke is rising, stop. Skewers run US$ 3–6 (≈ CLP 3,000–6,000). At 4,010 m you are well above San Pedro — if you feel the altitude, eat lightly and keep moving gently.
