Why travelers pick it
Nayara (formerly Alto Atacama) occupies one of the most beautiful plots around San Pedro: a quiet quebrada at the foot of the pre-Columbian fortress of Pukará de Quitor, with lagoon-style pools scattered among salt-carved rocks and cactus gardens. The plaza is a 10-minute walk — close enough for dinner in town, far enough that nights are silent except for wind and the occasional donkey.
The all-inclusive formula covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, local drinks and cocktails, plus a daily program of guided walks and bike outings. Standouts: the spa circuit, sunset swims in the highest pool, and evening planetarium sessions that pair well with a serious stargazing habit. With 42 rooms it is large by San Pedro standards, yet the terraced layout keeps it feeling scattered and private.
Who it fits: couples and honeymooners first, but families work well too thanks to the pools and space to spread out. The value math is straightforward — if you would eat most dinners at the hotel anyway, bundling meals, drinks and excursions narrows the effective gap with cheaper room-only rivals.
Good to know
Noise: near-silent at night — the quebrada sits away from Caracoles street; expect wind, birds and distant dogs, nothing more.
Heating: rooms and common areas heat well; June–August nights drop below 0°C at 2,450 m, so pack real layers for pool evenings.
Water: the lodge recycles and restricts — showers are generous by desert standards, but this is an arid ecosystem; refill bottles instead of buying plastic.
Altitude: at 2,450 m most guests feel mild breathlessness on day one; many deliberately spend the first afternoon poolside rather than booking a high-altitude excursion.
Layout: the property climbs a slope — pools, spa and rooms sit on different terraces joined by stone paths; ask for a lower room if stairs are an issue.
Booking tips
Book 3–6 months ahead for December–February and the July holiday weeks; the best-value room categories go first.
Rates swing hard with the season — the same room can cost nearly double between shoulder May and peak Christmas weeks, and transfers or premium wines often sit outside the base rate. Treat ranges as orientation, not quotes.
Arrival runs through Calama's El Loa airport (about 1 h 15 min by road); time your landing with our getting-to guide so the lodge can schedule pickup and a soft first afternoon.
